Sunday, October 26, 2025
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Presenter

A chapter workshop with percussionist Sylvie Zakarian.

Join us for this interdisciplinary workshop providing a holistic exposure to rhythm through movement and actual percussion playing with marimba soloist Sylvie Zakarian. We will be engaged in learning all 3 major categories of percussion playing –drums, mallet percussion, and auxiliary percussion. This offering will broaden and enhance the students’ understanding of rhythm. All participants will work on transforming the melodic line into comprehensive and connected rhythm patterns. We will focus on using rhythm as an organizational tool for music making.

No previous percussion playing experience is required – all are welcome!

This workshop will be held in person only.

The Boston Musical Intelligencer recently described her playing as “elegantly poised, [with] luscious timbres, moments of levity and joy as well as sadness and longing.” Ms. Zakarian weaves marimba sonorities into the classical repertoire, as well as original and artfully transcribed works for her. She has given critically acclaimed performances at venues including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall Theater in New York, Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, Berklee Performance Center, Cutler Majestic Theater and the Citi Performing Arts Center in Boston. She is Conservatory faculty at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, and Department Chair of Wood, Brass and Percussion at the Winchester Community Music School.
