We invite you to the Dalcroze Society of America's 2018 National Conference! Come, explore our conference theme, Improvisation: The Musical Mind Embodied, as our clinicians approach it from a number of different angles. And join us as we gather together to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the DSA's incorporation as a non-profit organization and the DSA's Lifetime Contribution to Dalcroze Education award recipient, Lisa Parker, Diplôme Supérieur. Special Guest Teacher Toru Sakai, Diplôme Supérieur, will join us from Japan.

The 2018 conference will be hosted at California State University/Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA (in the Los Angeles metro area), offering Dalcroze practitioners the opportunity to reconnect with friends from across the United States and around the world.

Essential to Dalcroze Education, improvisation figures in the pedagogy in many ways, from the physical actions students improvise to the music the teacher invents to give shape to students’ experience. Improvisation calls upon us to engage with our raw materials—be they rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, kinesthetic, or otherwise—and with one another, in ways both playful and purposeful, disciplined and free, intuitive and aware. As Dalcroze students, we're often called upon to try things out, take risks, and discover solutions that work best for us. Improvisation empowers us to personalize the education we’re receiving and make the music our own.

The conference’s Atelier format gives you a lot of choice as to which area to explore at any given time. It allows you to choose from among sessions offered in each of the five branches of Dalcroze Education—Eurhythmics, Rhythmic Solfège, Improvisation, Pedagogical Methods, and Plastique Animée—or a session on a special application of principles. The 75-minute time frame allows for questions and discussion. Come, explore fresh ways to improvise with your body, your voice, percussion, keyboard, and your primary instrument, and discover new ways to incorporate dynamic, spontaneous action in your classes.

Dalcroze Education

Dalcroze Education is a multi-modal, integrated pedagogical and aesthetic system developed by Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. Through exercises and games that involve rhythmic action and interaction, responsive physical movement, and vocal and instrumental improvisation, qualified practitioners use this system to help participants unite mind and body, perform at higher levels, and achieve greater wholeness. The Dalcroze Approach "in and through" music empowers participants to make vital connections on both the subjective and the interpersonal levels, through music, movement, improvisation, and discovery.

DSA National Conference

Every other year, Dalcroze colleagues, practitioners, teachers, clinicians, therapists, artists, and students—from the newly initiated to seasoned professionals—gather together to renew our passion for teaching, learning, communicating, interacting, and actualizing ourselves "in and through" music. We welcome the opportunity to greet old friends and meet new friends. If you share our love of these pursuits, welcome: you've come home.
