The Dalcroze Society of America is one way we Dalcrozians stay connected with one another across a vast geographic landscape. Through organized events, an online trove of resources, and this biannual meeting, the small but mighty group that is the DSA continues to uphold and perpetuate the pedagogical ideas of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze into the twenty-first century.

The DSA is a body composed of individuals interpreting and practicing Dalcroze in their own unique ways. One principle that connects us all is that we use the body as our primary vehicle with which to teach and experience music. Using movement as the means for learning is one of the pedagogical principles that excites and unites us.

The concept of learning and teaching through use of the body came to us at the turn of the nineteenth century from Jaques-Dalcroze, who was also a prolific writer. Among his many documents is a list of recommendations for Dalcroze teachers; in this issue you can find a translation of this list and a modern-day interpretation

Our newly launched website came as a response to member requests for more resources. At www.dalcrozeusa.org, you can continue to find information about in-person and online Dalcroze events. Members can also access full-length teaching videos, lesson plans, song repertoire pieces appropriate for Dalcroze sessions, historical and archival resources, and much more. Our member directory can connect you with local Dalcrozians in your area, and our online events such as the Dalcroze Lab can bring Dalcroze right to your living room.

The DSA is connected to other Dalcroze organizations around the world. In fact, in this issue you can read a review of a newly published collection of essays written by Dalcrozians from the international community. Michael Joviala’s review of this exciting new publication can be found here.

The DSA is run by volunteers and there are many opportunities to get involved. Whether you are interested in participating in meetings about Dalcroze pedagogy, history, marketing, the finances of a non-profit group, or something else, the DSA has room for you!
